Present-day Cluster Formation
نویسنده
چکیده
A review is presented of some of the observed features of cluster formation in our Galaxy and in external galaxies. Evidence is summarized suggesting that star clusters form only in the densest parts of large star-forming complexes, and that the molecular clumps in which they form are compressed in part by the effects of earlier star formation. The formation of massive globular-like clusters apparently requires much larger star-forming complexes than are now found in the Milky Way, and some circumstances in which they may form are noted.

Globular Cluster Formation in the Virgo Cluster
Metal-poor globular clusters (MPGCs) are a unique probe of the early universe, in particular the reionization era. A popular hypothesis is that the observed truncation of MPGC formation is due to reionization. Under this hypothesis, constraining the formation epoch of MPGCs provides a complementary constraint on the epoch of reionization. Moreover, as the earliest reionizing sources first forme...
متن کاملThe K s - band Luminosity and Stellar Mass Functions of Galaxies in z ∼ 1 Clusters
We present the near-infrared (Ks-band) luminosity function of galaxies in two z ∼ 1 cluster candidates, 3C336 and Q1335+28. A third cluster, 3C289, was observed but found to be contaminated by a foreground system. Our wide field imaging data reach to Ks=20.5 (5σ), corresponding to ∼M +2.7 with respect to the passive evolution. The near-infrared luminosity traces the stellar mass of a galaxy due...
متن کاملAre Globular Clusters the Remnant Nuclei of Progenitor Disk Galaxies?
The globular cluster system of a typical spheroidal galaxy makes up about 0.25% of the total galaxy mass (McLaughlin 1999). This is roughly the same mass fraction as contained in the nuclear star cluster (or stellar nucleus) present in most nearby low-mass galaxies. Motivated by this “coincidence”, this Letter discusses a scenario in which globular clusters of present-day galaxies are the survi...
متن کاملLetter to the Editor Black hole energy release to the Gaseous Universe
We estimate the energy release of black hole formation to the intra-cluster medium of the Coma cluster and find that this is comparable to the present day energy content. Therefore an energetic and maybe hydrostatic influence is possible. Our calculations rely on the assumption of an universal black hole to galaxy mass ratio (more exactly: spheroidal mass component of the stellar population), f...
